Our mission is to co-ordinate inter-agency efforts to improve services for the 12 to 21 year old youth-at-risk population, to help this group in an organised and efficient manner, and prevent offending and stop the cycle of reoffending.
CYGO is the secretariat to the National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation (NYGR).
What We Do
The Central Youth Guidance Office (CYGO) is an inter-ministry setup that looks into early intervention strategies to prevent youth at-risk from committing offences.
As the central co-ordinating agency, we keep an overview of the current youth-at-risk programmes and services offered, and address the present gaps. Our work is part of a wider continuum of initiatives to focus on youth guidance and early intervention.
We perform the following roles:
- Develop and drive an integrated approach towards prevention and early intervention so as to provide better support to youth-at-risk and help them find positive alternatives to crime and anti-social behaviour. This approach would span across agencies and include community organisations.
- Coordinate and review existing prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation efforts by agencies to address gaps in service deliveryand develop new programmes.
- Develop a centralised database to facilitate data sharing across agencies and for better identification, assessment, tracking, intervention and research purposes.
- Lead in collaborative research on offending behaviour and the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programmes and in turn design appropriate programmes to address youth-at-risk issues.
- Engage and work with social service agencies, self-help groups and other community organisations to develop programmes and to build up their capacity and capabilities.
