Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (CYS), Dr Vivian Balakrishnan will be attending the third ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting on 7 April in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The ASCC Council is one of three ASEAN Community Councils - the other two being the ASEAN Political-Security Community Council and the ASEAN Economic Community Council. It discusses ASEAN's socio-cultural agenda which is focused on poverty eradication and social and human development. The scope of ASCC Council's work includes the environment, education, culture, health, youth, women, children, workers, social welfare, and civil service training matters.
Accompanying Dr Vivian Balakrishnan are the two recently appointed Singapore Government's Representatives to the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) which will be inaugurated at the ASCC meeting. Dr Aline Wong will represent Singapore for women's rights and Mr Koh Choon Hui will represent Singapore for children's rights.
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said, ''I am confident that both Dr Wong and Mr Koh, with their sterling track record of leadership, service and advocacy, will make invaluable contributions to the cause of women and children in ASEAN.''
