Women (Celebrating Women)

Women enjoy equal status as men in Singapore. Article 12 (1) of the Constitution of Singapore states that “all persons are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection under the law”.

Singapore’s policy of meritocracy encourages women and men to do their best in all sectors of life. MCYS is the lead agency for women matters in Singapore.

    CEDAW Reports

    The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is a United Nations human rights treaty for women.

    Gender Statistics

    The Government of Singapore remains committed to achieving the goals set in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (“Beijing POA” for short) adopted at the 4th UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing in September 1995 to achieve gender equality.

    The Women’s Charter

    The Women’s Charter was passed in 1961 to protect the rights of women and girls in Singapore. The Women’s Charter is an Act which provides the legal basis for equality between husband and wife.

    Key Initiatives for Women

    6 women workgroups comprising of women from the people, private and public sectors were formed to look into issues which were pertinent to women in Singapore.

    Courses for Women

    A variety of information technology (IT) and financial literacy courses and programmes are available to women who are keen to upgrade their IT and financial skills.

    Services for Women in Need

    Hotlines of crisis shelters and counselling services are available to women who are victims of family violence in need of refuge or girls who are in moral danger.
