The Gender Inequality Index (GII) is a composite index that measures the inequality between female and male achievements in 3 dimensions. It ranges from 0, which indicates that women and men fare equally, to 1, which indicates that women fare as poorly as possible in all measured dimensions.
The 3 basic dimensions are:
-
reproductive health, as measured by maternal mortality ratio and the adolescent fertility rate;
-
empowerment, as measured by the share of parliamentary seats held by each sex and by secondary and higher education attainment levels; and
-
labour market, as measured by women’s participation in the workforce.
According to the Human Development Report 2011, Singapore is ranked 8th out of the 146 ranked countries with a score of 0.086.
